IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz has decided to dismiss Col. Erez Wiener, one of the main figures in the Harpaz affair, from the IDF. In a meeting between the two, held after the publication of the Israeli State Comptroller’s report on the affair, Gantz informed Wiener that he has decided to transfer his case to be handled by the officer contracts committee in the General Staff’s manpower department, a decision that means Wiener's dismissal from the military.
Col. Wiener informed the chief of staff that he does not intend to appeal his decision and that he has decided not pursue a legal case to remain in the IDF. Wiener served as the assistant of former IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi, and according to the report by the Israeli State Comptroller dealing with the Harpaz affair, he dealt with the gathering of degrading material concerning Israeli Minister of Defense Ehud Barak.
Gantz already hinted as to his intentions regarding Wiener last week when discussing the State Comptroller's report, saying that "If there is a need to ‘clean the yard’ a bit more, this is what will be done."
