Illana Dayan’s TV show Uvda (fact) added supplementary reasons for national shame and concern over what is transpiring at the highest levels of the defense establishment. The State Comptroller’s report about the Galant affair, which has become the Harpaz affair, which is turning into the Ashkenazi affair, will be detailed and apparently strong and unequivocal as well.
There is no need to wait for this report to understand that there is something very rotten causing a stench at the topmost floors of the General Staff building in the Kiriya.
Without touching upon the details of the messages that were passed between those involved, without touching upon who wrote the document, without touching upon the question as to why a citizen receives free access to sensitive bureaus, it is clear that something very improper happened here, to say the least.
The more disturbing question is whether this was an unusual incident or a general atmosphere, method, or behavioral approach of the most senior officials in the military establishment and those with which they come into contact. This is the question.
If this is an isolated incident, then care must be taken so that all those involved get what they deserve. If this is a prevailing atmosphere, something that has become the daily routine in these sensitive places, then there is need for more than just a surgical operation to remove the tumor, rather a comprehensive, aggressive treatment.
The question is what will be done with the State Comptroller’s report. Usually, the report is discussed for several days. Retired generals are interviewed and usually just rattle on and that is that. This must not be the case this time. Here we have a case of hurting the defense’s holiest of holies.
If the bureaus of those appointed over the security of every one of us are being conducted according to the patterns which were exposed in the Uvda article, if an air of “settling accounts” is what preoccupies the senior officials of the defense establishment, then we are facing a massive problem, one which requires swift care to clarify to those in central defense positions that they must not be engaged in such a system of intrigue, smearing, falsifications, and what not. They are in their roles to protect all of us, and not carry out "targeted assassinations,” which when they do so, they become akin to the large criminal organizations. A great honor, indeed.
